Ancient City of Plevrona
Ancient city of Plevrona mentioned for the first time by Homer along with four other Aetolian cities, the Calydon, Halkida, the Olenos and Pilini, on the famous list of Greek ships that participated in the Trojan War. Homer also found for the first time the national "Plefronios" next to the name of a resident of the city, "Agkeon ton Plefronion".
According to recent data which came to light after and the recent enhancement and restoration work of the site, it seems that the urban fabric of the city was organized by the Hippodamian system. Today it is visible in the fortification of some of the main monuments such as the theater and the market, and a large rock-hewn cistern, imposingly built terraces on the basis of public or private buildings, bathing facility with pool, fitness room, and residues of the urban fabric of belonging to house foundations from paved or gravel roads. Impressive signs of fortification is the main gate A with the oversized monolithic lintel, the Eastern Gate G, the arched gate B and towers with staircases to them and the devil of the wall. Outside the city fortification developed its cemeteries. Composed of elaborate funerary and monumental form complexes, cist tombs and large underground chamber tombs enclosed by burial enclosures very good conservation and a variety of architectural and morphological features.
