Greek Oranges
Orange in ancient Greek mythology has scholars identified with the golden fruit of the trees in the garden of the Hesperides. In mythology referred to as the "golden apples", which had given the goddess Earth as a wedding gift to Zeus and Hera. Hera planted trees in the garden of the Hesperides, which was guarded by Ladon, mythical dragon with a hundred heads, the land of the Hyperboreans. The mythical Atlas, was outside the garden and was condemned by Zeus to lift his shoulders eternal heaven. The daughters of Atlas stole these golden apples and so Hera instructed the Hesperides and Ladon their protection.
Orange is sweet or sour taste and is more or less fragrant depending on variety and quality. Some slight bitter taste which is sometimes observed due to amount of essential oil that has penetrated the flesh. Orange is rich in vitamin C. It also contains sugars, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D. [Citation pending]
In the area of Krioneri there are scattered orange fields which you can visit during the winter months and cut directly from the tree oranges and feel that unique taste of Greek Oranges!
