Evinos River
O Evinos springs from the mountains Vardousia border of the county Aitoloakarnania and Evrytania and having received the many torrent waters and their tributaries (Kotsalos, Snakes, Poriarata and Gidomantriti) after 113 km. Through the west of the Municipal Department of the Municipality of Galata Chalkeia and east of the Municipal Evinochori of Mesologi municipality which it gets its name from the river and flows into the Gulf of Patras (Kalydonio) bay.
According to the myths and legends of ancient Greece, the river takes its name from the king of the Aetolians Evinos, who drowned in the waters, when persecuted by Ida, who had stolen his daughter Marpissa.
Evinos River is known from Hercules over greater hero of Greek mythology and Deianeira. When Hercules arrived in Calydon, which was west of Evinos River and north of the current Evinochori, he went to the king Eneas and asked the hand of his daughter, of Deianeira, but there Hercules found a formidable rival Achelous, the God of namesake river. After battle Acheloos was defeated by Hercules and Oineas gave his daughter to Hercules.
It's known oil painting by J. F. Lagrenet, 1755, kept in the Louvre Museum in Paris. In this painting the centaur Nessos, grabbing the Diianeira crosses Evinos River, while the Hercules toxefei the opposite bank to defend his wife.
Over the centuries the Evinos, with its rich alluvial work (with Achelous) helped create the Lagoon. The riverside vegetation is rich of trees, poplar, ash, oleander and osier. In the bed area developed great civilization, who testified by archaeological finds (pelasgian and Mycenaean settlements). Evinos is also known for its stone bridges, the airlift, but also for their mills, and fulling.
To enhance the water supply for the metropolitan area of Athens, one of the largest projects constructed in the area, the dam and the tunnel Evinos -Mornou.I commencement of the work done in 1982 and the project was completed in 2002.
